Sana'a, Feb 21, 2011, The European Union condemns violence against protesters in Yemen's provinces against the regime.
“The EU strongly condemned the use of violence against peaceful protesters and called for the Yemeni authorities to immediately halt attacks by security forces and armed pro-government groups on peaceful protesters and journalists and avoid any escalation,” the EU said in a statement on Monday.
“The EU deeply deplored the loss of lives and called on all to exercise restraint and calm in order to avoid further casualties and violence,” the statement said.
The EU recalled Yemen’s obligations to protect the rights to life and security of the person, and the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.
The EU urged President Saleh and all political parties to reach out to the peaceful protesters and respond to the legitimate aspirations of the Yemeni people through comprehensive national dialogue and the implementation of genuine political reforms which would take forward Yemen's democratic process, said the statement.
