Yemen Parliament demands apology from PM for not attending President inauguration

February 28, 2012
The Parliament demanded on Tuesday Prime Minister Mohammed Saleh Basindoh apologizes for not attending the new Yemeni President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi inauguration ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Monday.
In its Tuesday's session which was chaired by the Speaker Yahia al-Rayie, the Parliament has demanded that Basindoh extend an apology to the President and another to the Parliament for deciding not to take part in the inauguration ceremony.
Given the primary importance of the occasion as it embodies the peaceful transfer of power, and since Basindoh is the Premier of the National Reconciliation Government; not a representative of one party or the other, he should have attended the ceremony, the Parliament members said.
Basindoh as well as all opposition figures refused to attend the ceremony because the former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh took part in it.
Saleh's General People Congress Party has the overwhelming majority in the Parliament as they account for more than two thirds of the total number of the members.
The House of Representative also approved sending a letter to the Cabinet, asking it to present a detailed report, explaining what it has achieved on recommendations and suggestions.
Basindoh has attended, in response to the Parliament request, early this year the debate on the controversial immunity law and urged the PMs to vote for it.
He was appointed as the head of the caretaker government based on the GCC-brokered deal which was signed in November in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.
