A Yemeni military official died Friday of injuries he sustained in a bomb attack in the southern province of Hadramawat the day before, reported the state news agency Saba.
Brigadier Omar Salem, the chief of the Army Staff Academy, was taken to hospital late Thursday with serious injuries after a bomb hit his car in the town of Mukalla in Hadramawat, the agency said, citing a local source.
“Investigations are under way to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify the perpetrators,” added the source.
Similar attacks have targeted senior security and military officials in southern Yemen in recent months, reported local media.
The Yemeni government has been pursuing a wide-scale military campaign since April, backed by the United States, against insurgents suspected of links with al-Qaeda.
President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, who took office in February, has vowed to continue fighting al-Qaeda operatives in the Arabian Peninsula country. - Sapa-dpa
