Yemeni opposition welcomes Gulf mediation

SANAA, Apr 7, 2011- The Yemeni opposition has welcomed an offer by Arab Gulf states to mediate between the president and opposition protesters who have demanded Ail Abdullah Saleh step down after 32 years in power.

Opposition spokesman Mohammed al-Sabri says their camp could accept the proposal, which includes that Saleh hand over power to his deputy in return for immunity from prosecution for him and his family. He says that under the Gulf states' offer, Saleh would have a choice whether to stay or leave Yemen after he steps down.

The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council — which includes Yemen's neighbors Oman and Saudi Arabia — has invited Saleh and the opposition to a mediation session in Saudi Arabia.

Saleh's government described the proposal as unconstitutional.
